Modern breeding has revolutionized not only the latest plant varieties, but industry experts have found creative and successful ways to build in-demand combination programs.
Our very own "combo queen" Becky Lacy was recently interviewed by Greenhouse Grower magazine for an article titled "On the Art of Creating Successful Combos" (Marisa Reyes, September 2025).
Some of the insights Becky shares in the article are:
Focus on consistency and ease of scheduling. Becky highlights the Trixi combo kit program to ensure uniformity from the start.
Trust in trialing and technical support. Trixi combos are trialed across many climates and in many seasons to make sure they hold up for the consumer.
Fill the gaps. Growers that struggle for off-peak holiday sales can turn to cool-season choices (Dianthus) or heat lovers (Lantana and Angelonia) to grab additional sales.
Don't forget about shade. Coleus, Fuchsia and other crops can "provide fresh solutions for this growing demographic," according to the article.
